The Bullet Journal is fast becoming a fantastic system to keep us all organized and productive, so naturally there are tremendous benefits to using it.
I started using my first bullet journal a year ago (yeah, I’ve been late to the party) and I have been using it ever since. Sometimes, we think paper and pen is dead with all the new ways to get organized via our phones, tablets and computers but there’s something about the act of writing that can inspire and help your brain feel more organized. To me it’s sometimes faster than reaching for my phone, signing in, finding the app, logging into it and then finally typing.
With a bullet journal, you simply open to a page and write. Although, the bullet journal has many benefits that we could all use, I’v listed out the top 10 ways a bullet journal can benefit you.
1. It can be customized to your needs and budget
Unlike a planner, a bullet journal is totally customizable. For instance, if you like to doodle, or if you like to put things in a certain order throughout the journal then you can do just that without the confines of lines and pre-made boxes or inserts. No need for expensive leather covers either, there are simple, economical ways to even make your own. Because you get to decide what you want in it, you can leave out anything you don’t want and get right down to business. The budget and customization is totally up to you.
2. It’s easy to learn and set up
The instructions for setting it up so that you can be more efficient are pretty easy. You use paper, a pen, and write your tasks down and repeat every month…that’s the basic idea. There are no rules that you can’t adjust. For instance, if you want to create your own key or legend(which is encouraged), you are free to do so as long as you remember what they mean. A quick read and you can have the whole thing set-up in a few minutes. Check out the founder of the bullet journal’s video here
3. It keeps everything organized
If you follow the system the way it was designed, mainly for simple tasks and events, things become organized and not stuck in your head where they get forgotten. Your tasks or ideas don’t get lost among the piles of post-it notes on your desk, bag or pocket.(been there, done that).
4. It lays everything out where you can see it
I don’t know about you but I am a very visual person. I need to see it to remember it – out of sight out of mind is not an issue here. When everything is in one place, it’s so much easier to get things done. All you have to do is flip to a page and there it is.
5. It inspires productivity
Do you like to cross things off your to do list then the bullet journal is for you. Something in the brain gets triggered when you have completed a task and marked it as done. It’s especially uplifting to see all the check marks, or boxes checked in a long list of to do’s. It makes you want to continue on thus making you more productive. Having it all organized in one area helps to get those productivity juices flowing.
6. Mental Health Tracking
If you’re in need of some mental clarity, a bullet can be your best friend. It can help you see unhealthy patterns with the use of a tracking system. It can help you uncover symptoms that can be used to share with a mental health provider. It can even be used as just a diary for your daily thoughts. The choices are endless.
7. Short term and long-term goals
If you really wanted to see how you were measuring up as far as goal setting, the bullet journal can make things easy to see. If you wanted to track how often you ate junk food, there’s a tracker you can create for that or if you’re tracking your career plan you can track that too. Not only can you track things but you can do it in your own style, and color too. Like the to do lists, it makes it extremely easy to see where you’re falling short and where you’re succeeding.
8. Creative outlet
My favorite part about the bullet journal is the amount of creativity you can put in it. Of course, if you’re not a great artist, it doesn’t matter because the pages are for you and you alone to see. There are also tons of videos out there to help you learn to draw better, create doodles or even improve your handwriting. The creativity is entirely up to you.
9. Self-care & gratitude
One of the best things you can do with a bullet journal is to transform yourself with it. I’m a total believer in personal development. What better way to keep the most important thing in your life – YOU in check than by setting up a way to show yourself some love. You can have daily gratitude pages, or maybe a mood tracker page.
10. It’s not digital
We all live in a digital world of screens all day long despite the research telling us we should be taking a break every now and then. By using your bullet journal you can actually get things done. You can eliminate distraction from what I call screen magnets that suck us in and have us scrolling through facebook despite our best intentions to simply get work done. Sometimes less is more to keep our brains happy and a simple system of using pen and paper can sometimes be the best benefit to ourselves.
